DALEVILLE, Ind. — A tragic accident occurred on Sunday morning on I-69 near the 234-mile marker in Daleville, claiming the lives of two adults. The incident was caused by a wrong-way driver who collided head-on with another vehicle, resulting in a chain reaction of collisions involving multiple vehicles.

The Indiana State Police were alerted to the presence of a wrong-way driver around 2:21 a.m. Upon arrival at the scene, they found several damaged vehicles obstructing the southbound lanes of I-69. It was determined that a silver Kia Forte was driving northbound in the southbound lanes when it crashed into a white Chevrolet Malibu. The impact was so severe that the engine of the Kia became dislodged and was left in the middle of the road. Shortly after, a silver Volkswagen struck the engine, and the Kia also struck a semi-truck.

Tragically, the driver and passenger of the Chevrolet Malibu, identified as Victoria Elaine Cox, 32, and Evan Daniel Cox, 26, both from Fort Wayne, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their lives were cut short in a devastating accident caused by the reckless actions of the wrong-way driver.

The driver of the Kia, Walter Saucedo-Mendoza, 30, from Indianapolis, sustained injuries and was immediately taken to Indiana University Ball Memorial Hospital. Due to the seriousness of his condition, he was later flown to a hospital in Indianapolis for further treatment. Meanwhile, the driver of the Volkswagen and the semi-truck escaped the collision unharmed.

Preliminary investigations suggest that alcohol may have played a role in the accident. Authorities are working to gather more information and determine the exact cause of the crash.

In response to the incident, the southbound lanes of I-69 were closed for approximately four and a half hours to facilitate the investigation and clear the wreckage. Traffic was diverted to alternative routes during this period, causing significant delays for motorists.
