Police – Accident – Death – Obituary News : Nebraska health authorities are performing extensive testing on hundreds of preschoolers in response to a confirmed case of tuberculosis at a day care center in Douglas County. The Douglas County Health Department has declared a public health emergency following the potential exposure of over 500 individuals to the disease.
According to the health department, the possible exposures occurred at the Westview YMCA drop-in day care facility between late spring and late October. In an effort to contain the spread of tuberculosis, the health department is investigating the activities of the infected individual during their contagious period, ensuring their isolation, and monitoring their medication until they test negative for the disease. Additionally, the department is working diligently to inform parents, children, and anyone else who had close contact with the patient about the potential exposure.
To assess the extent of the outbreak, health officials conducted testing over the weekend on children aged 4 and under. Furthermore, the health department has scheduled clinics at the YMCA from November 15-17 to test anyone who was identified as exposed between late May and August 21.
The health department emphasizes that testing for tuberculosis is only recommended for individuals who had close contact with the infected person on one or more occasions. Close contact includes being in the same room with the infected individual, but does not include brief exposures in areas such as cafeterias, hallways, restrooms, or gymnasiums.
Officials from the agency urge both staff and children who were exposed between August 21 and October 30 to undergo screening immediately and again 8-10 weeks after their most recent exposure. Children under the age of 4 who were exposed during the same period are advised to receive chest X-rays and window prophylaxis as soon as possible.
Parents or guardians of children who may have been exposed to tuberculosis received an email notification from the health department on November 8.

The disease spreads when an infected individual develops symptoms and coughs or breathes out the bacteria, particularly in enclosed spaces over an extended period.

However, each year, approximately 10 million people worldwide contract tuberculosis, resulting in 1.5 million deaths.
