Tragedy struck early Saturday morning when an Austin Police Department (APD) officer lost his life, and another officer was injured during a violent shootout that took place in South Austin. The fallen officer has been identified as Jorge Pastore, according to a report by KVUE. This heartbreaking event marks the first time in a decade that an APD officer has been shot and killed in the line of duty. The shootout not only claimed the lives of the officer but also resulted in the deaths of two civilians and the suspect.

Interim Police Chief Robin Henderson provided details of the incident, as reported by KVUE. It all began with a distressing 911 call just before 3 a.m., reporting a stabbing at a residence on Bernoulli Drive.

Upon reaching the scene, officers discovered two individuals injured inside the residence, along with the armed suspect. A third victim, who managed to escape, informed the police that the suspect was wielding a knife. This victim was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

SWAT Intervention and Fatalities

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team was summoned to the scene at approximately 3:06 a.m. The SWAT officers arrived at 4:11 a.m. and made a second forced entry into the residence. As they entered, the suspect opened fire, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.

Chief Henderson explained during a detailed media briefing on Saturday that, “At 3:06 a.m., because the suspect was armed and barricaded inside a residence and had two hostages, SWAT was called out.” She further added, “At approximately 4:11 a.m., SWAT officers arrived on the scene and forced entry into the residence a second time to rescue the victims.”

Tragically, two officers were struck during the intense exchange of gunfire. The distress call reporting the injured officers came at approximately 4:15 a.m. Sadly, one officer succumbed to his injuries, while the other remains in stable condition, as confirmed by KVUE. The suspect also lost his life in the shootout.

Inside the residence, authorities discovered two additional fatalities. However, the circumstances surrounding their deaths have not been immediately clarified.

The devastating incident has left the Austin community in a state of mourning. Mayor Kirk Watson expressed his heartfelt condolences on social media, emphasizing the city’s grief and acknowledging the bravery of those who protect and serve the community, according to KVUE.
