A tragic incident in Bridgewater has claimed the life of a beloved community member. Phillip Bumpus, a 75-year-old resident of Bridgewater, passed away on Wednesday after succumbing to injuries sustained when he was struck by a vehicle while in his wheelchair. Known and loved by many in the town, Bumpus had been a familiar sight as he traveled around Bridgewater in his motorized wheelchair.

The incident occurred on August 1st at approximately 9:43 a.m. Bridgewater Police received multiple 911 calls reporting that a pedestrian in a wheelchair had been hit by a vehicle near 241 Main Street. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found Bumpus lying on the grass between the roadway and sidewalk, with his wheelchair damaged. Initial investigations revealed that a maroon SUV or crossover-type vehicle had struck Bumpus before leaving the scene, heading westbound towards West Bridgewater. The West Bridgewater Police Department was immediately notified and provided with a description of the suspect vehicle.

Thanks to the diligent efforts of the West Bridgewater Police officers, a vehicle with damage consistent with the crash was located. The officers conducted a motor vehicle stop at the intersection of North Main and Matfield Streets in West Bridgewater.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as 61-year-old Bonnie Bowes, was the sole occupant. Bridgewater Police took her into custody at the scene and transported her to the Bridgewater Police station for booking. Subsequently, Bowes was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Personal Injury, OUI-Drugs Causing Serious Bodily Injury, Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Leaving the Scene of Property Damage, and Marked Lanes Violation.

The devastating news of Phillip Bumpus’ passing has left his family, friends, and the Bridgewater community in mourning. To pay their respects, relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours at Chapman Funerals & Cremations, located at 98 Bedford Street, Bridgewater, MA, on Thursday, November 16th, 2023, from 11 AM to 1 PM. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 1 PM, followed by burial at a later date.

As the community grieves the loss of Phillip Bumpus, questions arise regarding the potential consequences for Bonnie Bowes. It remains uncertain whether charges will be upgraded in light of Bumpus’ tragic death.
