Moose Factory, Ontario – The Moose Factory community is mourning the loss of 21-year-old Loni Chum, a member of the Moose Cree First Nation, who tragically lost their life in an ongoing investigation. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS) are urging residents to come forward with any surveillance or dash cam footage that could aid in their investigation.

Authorities are seeking assistance from the public for any video recordings captured in Moose Factory from November 6, 2023, at 8:00 p.m., to November 7, 2023, at 8:00 a.m. This crucial time frame could hold vital clues to help piece together the events leading up to the incident.

On the fateful morning of November 7, 2023, at approximately 3:00 a.m., NAPS officers swiftly responded to a distress call reporting an injured person on Jaban Street. Upon arrival, they discovered a gravely wounded 21-year-old individual. Immediate medical attention was provided, and the victim was promptly transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance. Tragically, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, the individual succumbed to their injuries.

This devastating incident has prompted a collaborative investigation led by the James Bay OPP Crime Unit in partnership with the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS), under the guidance of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB). Assisting in the inquiry are specialized units such as the OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement Team (TIME), OPP Forensic Identification Services (FIS), and the OPP Provincial Liaison Team (PLT). The Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service are also supporting the investigation to determine the cause and circumstances surrounding this tragic death.
