Police – Accident – Death – Obituary News : Tragic Incident at Kern Valley State Prison Investigated as Homicide

Officials from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) are currently conducting an investigation into the death of an inmate at Kern Valley State Prison, treating it as a homicide. The incident occurred on October 14 at 2:55 p.m. when two inmates, identified as Roland C. Corona, 57, and Luis Alvidrez, 33, allegedly attacked another inmate, Isaac Duran, with a weapon that was crafted within the prison facility.

Isaac Duran, 41, sustained multiple stab wounds during the assault and was immediately transferred to an external medical facility for a higher level of care. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Duran tragically succumbed to his injuries on November 9 at approximately 9:14 p.m. while under the care of Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield. It is important to note that no staff members or additional inmates were harmed during the incident.

In response to the incident, both suspects, Corona and Alvidrez, have been relocated to restricted housing while authorities carry out a thorough investigation. The Kern Valley State Prison’s Investigative Services Unit, the Kern County District Attorney’s Office, and the Kern County Coroner are jointly handling the investigation. Additionally, the Office of the Inspector General has been notified, and the official cause of Isaac Duran’s death will be determined by the Kern County Coroner.

Isaac Duran had been incarcerated since April 17, 2003, after being received from Tulare County. He was serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole for two counts of Attempted Murder in the first degree. His sentence also included enhancements for intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, and street gang activity. Moreover, Duran had received a 12-year, four-month sentence from Kings County for two counts of assault by a prisoner with a deadly weapon/instrument, three counts of possession/manufacture of a deadly weapon by a prisoner, and battery on a non-prisoner.

Roland C. Corona, who is serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole, was received from Fresno County on June 4, 2003. His charges include robbery in the first degree with enhancements for the use of a firearm, burglary in the first degree with enhancements for the use of a firearm, false imprisonment with enhancements for the use of a firearm, vehicle theft, receiving stolen property, and criminal threat to cause great bodily injury/death as a third striker. Corona had also been sentenced in Monterey County to serve twelve years for three counts of possession/manufacture of a deadly weapon by a prisoner.

Luis Alvidrez, 33, had been received from San Diego County on June 1, 2017, serving an 18-year, four-month sentence for two counts of second-degree robbery with enhancements for personal use of a dangerous or deadly weapon. He had also been sentenced in Kern County to serve five years for possession/manufacture of a deadly weapon by a prisoner and assault by a prisoner with a deadly weapon or force likely to produce great bodily injury as a second striker.
