Man Arrested After High-Speed Chase in Washington County

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ga. — A man is in custody after leading Washington County deputies on a high-speed chase that ended in Baldwin County, according to a press release from the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office on their Facebook page.

The incident unfolded on Friday afternoon when a vigilant Washington County deputy, while patrolling the area of Highway 540 and Lamars Creek Road, noticed a car travelling at 63 mph in a 45 mph construction zone. Concerned about public safety, the deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

However, instead of complying with the deputy’s instructions, the driver of the vehicle accelerated, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph. The deputy immediately initiated a pursuit, with the fleeing car weaving dangerously through traffic.

During the course of the chase, the passenger of the vehicle began discarding several items out of the window. Acting swiftly, law enforcement officials were able to retrieve and identify these items as illegal narcotics.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Washington County 911 contacted the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office for assistance. Deputies from Baldwin County promptly responded, coordinating with their counterparts to set up spike strips along the intended route of the fleeing vehicle.

As the pursued car entered Baldwin County, it collided with the strategically placed spike strips, causing its tires to deflate. The driver’s attempt to continue the escape was thwarted, and law enforcement officers successfully apprehended both the driver and the passenger.

The driver has been identified as 29-year-old Malachi Wint, hailing from Gaston, South Carolina. Wint was not only wanted in North Carolina for aggravated assault but was also found to be operating a stolen vehicle from South Carolina. The seriousness of his alleged crimes has prompted authorities to pursue multiple felony charges.

Sharif Dennis, a 25-year-old resident of Charlotte, North Carolina, was identified as the passenger in the vehicle. Like Wint, Dennis also faces a series of felony charges in relation to the incident.

This dramatic incident serves as a reminder of the dedication and bravery displayed by law enforcement officers in ensuring public safety. Thanks to their swift and coordinated efforts, a dangerous high-speed chase was brought to a safe conclusion, and two individuals involved in alleged criminal activities were taken into custody.
