According to a press release issued by the Indiana State Police, Madison County Dispatch received a distress call reporting a wrong-way driver at approximately 2:21 a.m. Shortly after, at 2:31 a.m., another call came in, alerting authorities of a head-on collision at the 234-mile marker on I-69.

Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene to find several vehicles extensively damaged, obstructing the southbound lanes of the interstate. Preliminary investigations revealed that a silver Kia Forte had been traveling in the wrong direction, northbound in the southbound lanes, when it crashed head-on into a white Chevrolet Malibu. The impact was so severe that the engine of the Kia dislodged from the vehicle and came to rest in the left lane. Tragically, the driver and passenger of the Chevrolet Malibu, identified as Victoria Elaine Cox, 32, and Evan Daniel Cox, 26, both residents of Fort Wayne, were pronounced dead upon arrival.

The driver of the Kia, Walter Saucedo-Mendoza, 30, from Indianapolis, sustained injuries in the collision. Mendoza was promptly transported to a local hospital and later airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital for further medical attention.

Fortunately, the drivers of the silver Volkswagen and the semi-tractor trailer involved in the incident emerged unharmed.

Authorities suspect that alcohol played a significant role in the crash, contributing to the tragic loss of life and extensive damage to the vehicles involved.

As authorities undertook their investigation and cleared the crash site, the southbound lanes of I-69 remained closed for approximately four and a half hours, causing significant traffic disruption in the area.

This devastating incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the potentially catastrophic consequences of impaired or reckless behavior behind the wheel. The Indiana State Police urge all motorists to prioritize safety and ensure they are fit to drive before getting behind the wheel.
