The 39-year-old father of six, hailing from Kibbutz Ein Tzurim, lost his life on Friday during an operation to inspect a booby-trapped tunnel entrance in the Beit Hanoun area of the Gaza Strip. Three other Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reservists, Master Sgt. (res.) Matan Meir, Sgt. Maj. (res.) Yossi Hershkovitz, and Master Sgt. (res.) Sergey Shmerkin, also lost their lives in the same incident. All of them were from the 551st Reserve Paratrooper Brigade’s 697th Battalion.
Leiter, who had plans to start a training placement at a hospital as part of his studies to become a doctor, was deeply involved in volunteer work. His father, Yechiel, spoke at the funeral, urging President Joe Biden to stand with Israel in its fight against evil.
Speaking directly to President Biden, Yechiel Leiter said, “Dear Mr. President Joe Biden, I’m taking the liberty of talking to you from Jerusalem. We have two things in common, me and you. Number one, we were both born in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The second thing we have in common is that, as of last Friday, I, like you, am a bereaved parent.”
Addressing rumors of pressure on Israel to hold off its offensive, Yechiel Leiter pleaded with President Biden, saying, “If those rumors are true—I hope they’re not—but if they’re true, I respectfully ask of you, here on my son’s grave: Cease and desist. Stand back, Mr. President. Don’t pressure us.”
