Hong Kong, 12th November 2023 – A devastating industrial accident occurred yesterday at a construction site in Yau Ma Tei, resulting in the unfortunate death of a 31-year-old construction worker, identified as Mr Ng. The incident, which took place at the junction of Ferry Street and Kansu Street, has sent shockwaves through the community.

The fateful incident unfolded at approximately 1.43pm, when a crane was in the process of hoisting a collection of metal bars from a depth of 10 meters. In a tragic turn of events, the metal bars suddenly slipped from the crane, plummeting to the ground below and causing injuries to a total of four workers, including Mr Ng. The impact of the falling bars left Mr Ng with severe injuries to his head, hands, and feet, prompting immediate medical attention and surgical intervention. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, Mr Ng’s condition remained critical. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries at 3.15pm today, marking a somber day in Yau Ma Tei.

The unforeseen incident was triggered by a cable snapping during the lifting operation, leading to the catastrophic fall of the metal bars. The four workers, aged between 28 and 41, bore the brunt of the accident. While two of them sustained minor injuries to their waist and foot, they were swiftly rescued and taken to Kwong Wah Hospital for immediate treatment.

However, Mr Ng and another worker were trapped beneath the weight of the fallen bars. It took rescue teams until approximately 2.35pm to extricate both men from the precarious situation. At the moment of their rescue, both individuals were semi-conscious, visibly injured, and in need of urgent medical attention. One worker suffered from a bleeding head wound, his work clothes stained with blood, while Mr Ng endured injuries to his head and left forearm.

This tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the inherent dangers faced by construction workers on a daily basis. The construction industry plays a vital role in Hong Kong’s development, but it is imperative that stringent safety measures and protocols are upheld to prevent such devastating accidents.
