27-Year-Old Man Arrested in Connection with Fatal Shooting of Cleveland Smith in The Bronx

A 27-year-old man has been taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting of a 35-year-old man last month in the Mt. Hope area of The Bronx.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting incident inside a residential building at 154 East 175th Street on Sunday, October 1. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 35-year-old male victim with a gunshot wound to the torso. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) transported the victim to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The investigation is ongoing, and no other arrests have been made at this time.

The deceased has been identified as Cleveland Smith, a 35-year-old resident of the Mt. Hope area in The Bronx.

Following an ongoing investigation, authorities have arrested Fili Nunez Rodriguez, a 27-year-old resident of Washington Heights in Manhattan. The arrest took place on November 1 at 9:25 a.m. in The Bronx.

Rodriguez has been charged with murder, criminal possession of a loaded firearm, and reckless endangerment. It is important to note that an individual arrested and charged with a crime is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

In a separate incident in the Mt. Hope area of the Bronx, Miguel Diaz, a 40-year-old man who had been released from prison four months earlier, was arrested for a nonfatal shooting outside a deli on October 4. One person was struck in the arm during the incident.

According to the latest crime statistics released by the NYPD, overall crime rates in New York City continue to decline. The month of October saw a decrease in shooting incidents and murders, as well as an increase in arrests across all major crime categories. In October 2023, there was an 8.1% drop in shooting incidents compared to the same month.
