Pimpri-Chinchwad city witnessed a breakthrough in the recent spate of thefts targeting women during the festive season as the local police successfully arrested a 23-year-old man on Saturday. The accused, identified as Rohit Dashrath Gavade, a resident of Chikhali, originally hails from the Indapur area of the Pune district.

This arrest comes in the wake of multiple incidents reported in the Chikhali area, where women were robbed of their gold chains while engrossed in Diwali shopping. The first incident occurred on November 7, when a 24-year-old woman fell victim to a chain-snatching incident. Another similar incident took place on October 26, where the accused snatched a gold chain from another woman in the same locality.
Alarmed by the consecutive incidents, the police department promptly launched an operation to apprehend the culprit. As part of their investigation, the police meticulously collected CCTV footage from the area to identify the suspect.
On Saturday, while conducting routine patrols, the police noticed an individual displaying suspicious behavior. Acting swiftly, they intercepted the suspect and initiated an interrogation. Subsequently, it was revealed that the accused was involved in several other theft cases.
Officials from Chikhali police station stated, “The accused specifically targeted women who were preoccupied with Diwali shopping.” The police have managed to recover two gold chains that were stolen during separate incidents. The investigation into the accused’s involvement in related cases is currently underway.
