The first victim, an Indonesian man, was reportedly mauled by a tiger in a rubber plantation in Kelantan. His body was discovered earlier, and authorities have been investigating the incident. Shortly after, another tragic incident occurred when a 22-year-old foreign worker from Myanmar was found dead after a tiger attack in a private rubber plantation in Meranto, Gua Musang.

The latest incident has raised alarms about the rising number of wildlife conflicts in the area. It is a matter of great concern that two fatal attacks have occurred within such a short time frame.

According to the Gua Musang Police Chief, Superintendent Sik Choon Foo, the attack on the second victim took place yesterday afternoon at around 1:30 PM. The autopsy report of the deceased has confirmed that he was attacked by a tiger, and the fatal injury was a bite wound to the head. The victim’s wife and three other Burmese workers were also present in the plantation at the time of the attack, but fortunately, they were not harmed. They immediately sought help from a nearby Chinese person who rushed the victim to the hospital.

The police are treating the case as a sudden death, and investigations are ongoing. In response to these incidents, the National Parks and Wildlife Protection Bureau has set up bait traps at the site of the attacks to capture the roaming tiger.

Mohamad Hafid Rohani, the Director of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) in Kelantan, confirmed that both attacks happened within a 10-kilometer radius. He mentioned that there were no prior complaints from the private rubber plantation in Meranto after the first incident. The distance from Gua Musang town to the rubber plantation is approximately 50 km, and it takes one to two hours to reach the location by four-wheel drive.

Perhilitan records reveal that there have been five cases of injuries and deaths caused by tiger attacks in Gua Musang since July 5, 2021, until yesterday. In response to these incidents, Perhilitan has taken proactive steps by setting up tiger traps and camera traps in areas identified as tiger roaming locations. They have also advised plantation and private workers to avoid working alone and always work in groups, while also urging them not to provoke any wildlife.

These tragic incidents highlight the urgent need for measures to address the growing conflicts between humans and wildlife in the region. Authorities and relevant agencies must work together to ensure the safety of the local population and find sustainable solutions that protect both humans and wildlife.
