LAWRENCE, Kan. (WIBW) – A 19-year-old from North Carolina was taken into custody for driving under the influence (DUI) after she lost control of her vehicle and flipped it on a Lawrence bridge, with two other teenagers as passengers.

According to the Lawrence Police Department, the incident occurred around 4:45 a.m. on Sunday, November 12th, when emergency crews received reports of a collision on the southbound Highway 59 bridge over the Kansas River.

Upon arrival, first responders discovered a vehicle that had collided with the concrete barrier and subsequently overturned. The driver, identified as 19-year-old Kira T. West from Turkey, N.C., was accompanied by two 18-year-old passengers.

Law enforcement officials promptly arrested West on charges of driving under the influence. However, as of 1:30 p.m., she has been released from custody after posting a $750 bond.

Fortunately, the occupants of the vehicle did not sustain any injuries that required medical attention. Additionally, it appears that no other vehicles were involved in the incident. Furthermore, the Lawrence Police Department confirmed that the bridge itself did not suffer any structural damage as a result of the accident.

To ensure public safety and facilitate the necessary investigation, the bridge was temporarily closed between 4:45 a.m. and 6:15 a.m., causing some inconvenience to early morning commuters.
