Tragic Incident Claims Life of Worker in Devastating Fire Onboard Oil Tanker at Chennai Port

Chennai Port, renowned for its bustling maritime activities, was marred by a horrifying incident on Friday, as a fire engulfed an oil tanker, resulting in the death of one worker and leaving three others injured. The deceased has been identified as Sahaya Thangaraj, a 45-year-old resident of Tondiarpet, while the injured workers, Joshua (24), Rajesh (35), and Pushpalingam (48), all hailing from Tondiarpet, have been rushed to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for prompt medical attention. The vessel had docked at Chennai Port on October 30, primarily for essential repair work.

The unfortunate incident occurred when the workers were diligently carrying out repairs in the vicinity of the vessel’s engine, employing a gas cutter. Tragically, sparks emitted from the gas cutter inadvertently landed on a vulnerable pipeline, triggering a fierce fire that rapidly spread throughout the tanker. Detailed police sources have confirmed that the accident transpired due to this unfortunate chain of events. The Harbour Police have promptly initiated an investigation into the matter, striving to ascertain the precise circumstances that led to this catastrophic incident.
