Accident – Death – Obituary News : New Details Emerge in Tragic Edmonton Shooting that Claimed Lives of Father and Son
Edmonton, Canada – In a shocking incident that unfolded on Thursday, a targeted shooting claimed the lives of a 41-year-old man, identified as Harpreet Uppal, and his 11-year-old son in Edmonton. The Edmonton Police Service has revealed that Uppal was extensively known to investigators and had ties to the gang and drug underworld.
The devastating incident took place in a shopping centre parking lot off Ellerslie Road at 50th Street, where Uppal was accompanied by his son and another young boy. Gunfire erupted, leaving Uppal and his innocent son fatally wounded, while the third boy miraculously escaped physical harm.
Colin Derksen, acting superintendent of the EPS Criminal Investigations Division, shed light on the decision to publicly disclose Uppal’s identity. Typically, law enforcement agencies wait until a death is confirmed as a homicide before revealing the victim’s identity. However, Derksen explained that exceptions are made in cases where public safety is at stake or when there is an urgent investigative need, such as generating helpful tips from the public. In Uppal’s case, his previous involvement in a shooting incident at a Royal Pizza restaurant in October 2021 played a significant role in the decision to release his identity.
During the Royal Pizza incident, surveillance footage captured a suspect approaching the restaurant and firing shots through a window, forcing Uppal’s family to take evasive action. Multiple arrest warrants were subsequently issued, and a 26-year-old man voluntarily surrendered. However, the charges against him were later dropped. While Derksen refrained from confirming whether the man was considered a suspect in Thursday’s shooting, the possibility remains open.
Addressing the tragic death of the 11-year-old boy, the EPS emphasized that he was not caught in the crossfire or mistakenly killed. While it is evident that Uppal was deliberately targeted, the motive behind the young boy’s death remains unclear. Derksen expressed hope that further investigation would uncover the truth and dispel the notion that the child was intentionally followed and killed.
In a heartfelt statement, Derksen lamented the changing nature of organized crime, describing incidents like Thursday’s shooting as “sick and twisted.” The EPS is determined to bring the perpetrators to justice and restore safety to the community.
Aside from Uppal’s son, there was another young boy present during the fatal shooting. Fortunately, he remained inside the vehicle and escaped physical harm. The EPS confirmed that the third boy is around the same age as the 11-year-old victim.
As investigations continue, the EPS has refrained from releasing the name of Uppal’s son, as they prioritize providing support to the grieving family. The community is urged to come forward with any information that may assist in solving this heinous crime and bringing closure to the devastated family..
