More than a week has passed since the tragic assault incident in the Far East Valley that resulted in the untimely death of 16-year-old Preston Lord. To honor his memory, a candlelight vigil was held in San Tan Valley for the slain teenager.

Preston’s death marks a solemn milestone for the Queen Creek Police Department, as it is the first homicide investigation in the department’s short history. The department only began its first patrol in January 2022, making this a devastating moment for the entire community.

According to initial reports, Queen Creek Police received a distressing 911 call regarding an assault in the vicinity of 194th Street and Via Del Rancho on the night of October 28. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a juvenile lying in the roadway, gravely injured.

“He was immediately transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Unfortunately, on Monday, October 30, he passed away,” stated a portion of the official statement released by Queen Creek Police officials.

The victim’s aunt, Melissa Lord, tearfully revealed that Preston’s heart had stopped, and that CPR was administered by fellow partygoers until an ambulance arrived. Melissa further disclosed that her nephew had suffered a severe brain injury.

On November 1, Queen Creek Police addressed rumors surrounding their response to the incident, clarifying that while there were several calls to the area, only one emergency call was made to report the assault at the intersection of 194th Street and Via Del Rancho.

The department also emphasized the importance of submitting tips through official channels rather than on social media. They expressed gratitude for the numerous tips received, as well as the overwhelming support shown on social media, but stressed that the investigation could be compromised if information was shared publicly.

Queen Creek Police officials confirmed that they have executed several search warrants related to leads received, but no further details have been disclosed at this time.

Hundreds of mourners gathered for the vigil on November 9, offering support and solace to each other. Candles were lit, symbolizing the light that Preston brought into the lives of those around him, even in the face of darkness.

“If you had the privilege of knowing Preston, you would know that he was an exceptional young man,” expressed one of the victim’s relatives. “He excelled academically and had a heart of gold.”

Another attendee at the vigil shared, “I will deeply miss seeing Preston at school every day. His presence was a gift, and the moments we shared were incredibly precious.”

Meanwhile, the Queen Creek Police Department is seeking the public’s help in their investigation. They are requesting any surveillance footage or information about individuals or vehicles in the area between Ocotillo Road and Chandler Heights Road, and from Sossaman Road to Hawes Road, during the hours of 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on October 28.
