TROUTMAN, N.C. – A shocking incident unfolded in Troutman last weekend, resulting in the tragic death of 18-year-old Alexander Hipple from Mooresville. Authorities have now revealed that the incident was sparked by an alleged drug deal that quickly turned into an armed robbery. As investigations continue, a 19-year-old suspect remains at large, while a 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with the case.

The Troutman Police received a distress call on November 4, reporting that two individuals had been shot at the Food Lion on Main Street. Tragically, Hipple succumbed to his injuries, while the driver of the car, identified as 20-year-old Zachary Craig, sustained a gunshot wound but is expected to recover. According to the police, the victims had arranged to meet two individuals for a marijuana transaction. However, upon arrival, the suspects brandished firearms and demanded the victims hand over the drugs.

In an attempt to escape, the victims tried to drive away, but the suspects opened fire, striking Hipple three times. The swift response from Troutman investigators and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) agents led to the identification and subsequent arrest of a 17-year-old suspect on November 7. The teenager is currently being held in a juvenile detention center, but prosecutors have stated that he will be tried as an adult once the case is transferred to North Carolina Superior Court.

The second suspect has been identified as 19-year-old James Richard Gann from Cornelius. Authorities executed a search warrant at Gann’s residence in an effort to locate him and gather additional evidence relating to the shooting. Unfortunately, Gann was not present at his home, and it is believed that he has fled North Carolina.

Troutman police are urging the public to come forward with any information regarding Gann’s whereabouts.
