CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. — Angela Montgomery, a 25-year-old woman from Rincon, Georgia, has been sentenced after being convicted of shooting a woman and kidnapping her six-week-old twin sons. Last week, Montgomery pleaded guilty but mentally ill to all charges related to the 2021 incident.

The incident took place on May 11, 2021, when Savannah police received reports of a person shot at a residence on NE 36th Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered 23-year-old Gabrielle Rodgers with gunshot wounds, and she was immediately transported to the hospital in critical condition.

According to the investigation, Montgomery, who was identified as the suspect, left the scene with Rodgers’ twin boys, Matto and Lorenzo. Thanks to tips from the community, law enforcement was able to track Montgomery to a residence in Effingham County on St. Andrews Road. At 2:30 p.m., with the assistance of the Rincon Police Department and Effingham County Sheriff’s Office, SWAT took Montgomery into custody. The twins were found unharmed at the location but were taken to the hospital for evaluation as a precautionary measure.

Savannah Police Chief Roy Minter expressed relief at the swift resolution of the case, stating, “What happened today is every mother’s worst nightmare. We are so thankful that Matto and Lorenzo were located quickly and were ultimately unharmed.” Chief Minter also commended the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies and the community in apprehending the suspect. He expressed hope for Rodgers’ full recovery and her eventual reunion with her sons.

During the investigation, Montgomery claimed that she was helping her twin sister, whom she does not actually have, and that the kidnapped babies belonged to her sister. However, evidence revealed that Montgomery had been communicating with mothers on Facebook and had arranged a meeting with Rodgers on the day of the incident.

Rodgers has since recovered from her injuries and has been reunited with her twin sons. The family is grateful for the support they received throughout this challenging ordeal.

Montgomery’s sentence was determined after she underwent a mental health evaluation at the request of her lawyer. She pleaded guilty but mentally ill to criminal attempt to commit murder and aggravated assault, which carries a 30-year sentence. Additionally, she pleaded guilty to two counts of kidnapping, each carrying a 20-year sentence to be served concurrently with life probation. It remains uncertain whether Montgomery will serve her sentence in a mental health facility or a prison.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of community cooperation and the diligent efforts of law enforcement in ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals involved.
