US Sex Offender Deported from the Philippines

MANILA — The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has successfully intercepted and deported a US citizen convicted of sex crimes, sending him back to his home country. The American sex offender, identified as Terry Lynn Spies, 60, arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on November 3, aboard an Eva Air flight from Taiwan. The BI’s border control and enforcement unit (BCIU) promptly took action to ensure his immediate removal.

BCIU deputy chief for operations, Joseph Cueto, confirmed that Spies was expelled from the Philippines on November 4, via an Eva Air flight, effectively ending his presence in the country. This deportation comes as part of the BI’s ongoing efforts to curb the entry of foreign nationals with criminal records, particularly those convicted of sex crimes.

According to the BI, Spies is just one of approximately 140 foreigners who have been denied entry into the Philippines this year due to their history of convictions related to sex crimes. The Philippine Immigration Act includes a provision that prohibits the entry of aliens with prior convictions involving moral turpitude, ensuring the safety and security of Filipino citizens.

Specifically, Spies was convicted in November 2012 by a court in Texas for engaging in online solicitation of a minor. The Interpol’s national central bureau in Manila obtained this information from the US Department of Homeland Security. The court found Spies guilty of luring a 14-year-old girl through telecommunications for “indecent purposes,” a clear violation of Texas laws.
