According to the latest report from CBS News, the man who was fatally shot by Baltimore police officers has been identified as Hunter Jessup. Law enforcement authorities stated that he was standing on Brunswick Street at approximately 12:30 p.m.

However, he was suddenly instructed to stop by the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officers. This led to a foot chase, with the man fleeing onto Wilkens Avenue. The pursuing officers attempted to apprehend him, resulting in the man falling down a set of stairs.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley explained that after the armed man fell, he pointed his gun at the officers, leaving them with no choice but to use lethal force.

“We have not yet confirmed whether the individual had fired any shots. However, we do know that he pointed the weapon. The body-worn camera footage does not clearly show whether shots were fired,” stated Worley.

Jessup was immediately transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma for treatment. Unfortunately, the injuries sustained from the shooting were too severe, leading to his untimely death.

Worley initially believed that one of the police officers had been shot during the incident. However, it was later confirmed that the officer had only sustained minor injuries and was subsequently released from the hospital.

“At one point, we believed that one of our officers had been shot, but that was not the case. The officer has been released from the hospital and is currently cooperating with detectives,” said the BPD official.

A person walks past a police car on July 28, 2019, in Baltimore, Maryland. President Donald Trump has recently garnered criticism for referring to the city of Baltimore as “disgusting.” While the city has affluent areas, it also faces persistent crime problems and has one of the highest murder rates in the nation for a city of its size.

Residents of Baltimore are now expressing their concerns and questioning the actions of the Baltimore Police Department, as reported by The Baltimore Sun. Some residents are asking whether the foot chase was necessary and if it was truly essential to resort to lethal force against the man.

Mike Davis, a 28-year-old Baltimore resident, wonders why the BPD officers were unable to apprehend the suspect despite a large number of officers being involved in the pursuit. He argues that the police should refrain from engaging in foot chases to apprehend individuals carrying firearms. Davis believes that if residents are being chased by the police while carrying guns, it is only natural for them to try to escape.

Davis, who was also a witness to the incident, claims to have heard 10 to 15 gunshots. The families of the area are deeply saddened by the incident and disappointed with the actions of the BPD.

They describe Jessup as a “goofy” man who enjoyed listening to music every day. However, their beloved brother was tragically taken away by the BPD on that fateful day.
