Fortunately, two quick-thinking NYPD officers were on hand to carry out a heroic rescue and save the man’s life.

The incident unfolded on Saturday afternoon at the 90th Street and Roosevelt Avenue station. Officers Jonathan Valle and David Canarte, both with just two years of experience since graduating from the academy, were assigned to the Mobile Force Field Post at the station when they witnessed the terrifying scene. Officer Valle recounted the events, stating, “We noticed that a male was walking a little bit too close to the edge, and all of a sudden he just fell onto the tracks.” With a train fast approaching in the distance, the officers wasted no time and sprang into action.

Officer Valle bravely jumped onto the tracks, while Officer Canarte attempted to get the attention of the train engineer. “I signaled the train to stop, not sure if he saw me, but if he didn’t, we had less than a minute to get him out,” Canarte explained.

With the assistance of a good Samaritan, Officer Valle managed to lift the victim into the waiting hands of Officer Canarte, who was on the platform. Canarte successfully pulled the man back onto the platform, ensuring his safety. Both Valle and the good Samaritan swiftly climbed back onto the platform just before the train arrived at the station.

Valle commented on the physical strength required for the rescue, saying, “He was a big guy, but with enough push-ups from the academy, you’re able to hoist him up.” The victim, a 23-year-old Bronx resident, was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital. It is clear that this incident could have had a much more tragic outcome if not for the heroic actions of these officers.
