The incident unfolded around 8:57 a.m. when officers swiftly responded to a distress call reporting a stabbing incident in the 300 block of 69th Way. Dispatch promptly informed the officers that the suspect had attacked his mother, an adult female victim, who managed to find shelter in a room with another unharmed relative.

Upon arrival at the scene, the officers encountered the male adult suspect inside a residence, brandishing a knife. In an attempt to defuse the situation, the officers repeatedly instructed the suspect to drop the weapon. However, the suspect defiantly refused to comply and instead advanced menacingly towards the officers, raising the knife. Faced with an imminent threat, the officers were left with no choice but to respond with lethal force, resulting in an officer-involved shooting.

Preliminary findings revealed that prior to the officers’ arrival, the suspect had already attacked the victim, inflicting non-life-threatening injuries.

The Long Beach Fire Department promptly dispatched personnel to the scene, who provided immediate medical assistance to both the suspect and the victim before transporting them to a local hospital. Tragically, it was later discovered that the suspect, identified as 38-year-old Eriberto Penaloza, a resident of Long Beach, had sustained stab wounds to his upper body and succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment. The victim, on the other hand, was also taken to a local hospital for treatment of her non-life-threatening injuries.
