27-Year-Old Patient Dies After Receiving Anesthesia at Lifeline Hospital in Maharashtra

An Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) has been initiated against Lifeline Hospital in Panvel, Maharashtra, following the tragic death of a 27-year-old patient moments after he received anesthesia before a scheduled operation. The incident, which occurred on November 6, has raised concerns over the hospital’s procedures and patient safety.

The patient, identified as Siddharth Katkar from Raigad district, had been admitted to the hospital for nasal surgery to address bone enlargement. However, his condition took a devastating turn when he passed away shortly after being administered anesthesia by the hospital staff.

Expressing their grief and anger, the family of Siddharth Katkar has accused the hospital staff and doctors of negligence. They have lodged a formal complaint against the hospital, urging authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to their loved one’s untimely demise.

Offering an explanation, Dr Prakash Patil, the chief of Lifeline Hospital, stated that Siddharth had a severe allergic reaction to the Scoline injection, which ultimately resulted in his death. The Scoline injection, or Succinylcholine Chloride Injection, is commonly used to induce muscle relaxation during anesthesia and surgical procedures. It functions by blocking specific chemical messengers responsible for muscle rigidity, inflammation, or swelling, leading to improved muscle movement.

Local authorities have taken charge of the situation and sent the patient’s body for postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. This step aims to provide clarity and gather crucial evidence as the investigation progresses.

The investigation into this tragic incident is currently underway, with authorities delving into the hospital’s practices and protocols. They will scrutinize whether any lapses in standard operating procedures or medical negligence contributed to the patient’s unfortunate demise.
