ZAMBOANGA CITY – Tragedy struck in Sumisip, Basilan on Wednesday afternoon when a shooting incident in front of the district hospital claimed the lives of two individuals, including a provincial board member. The victims were identified as Basilan board member Nasser Asarul and civilian militia Basid Kari Karim. According to Brigadier General Alvin Luzon, commander of the Army’s 101st Infantry Brigade, the two had a long-standing feud.

The incident occurred at around 1:50 p.m. when Asarul and Karim got into a heated argument at a nearby eatery. Asarul was having refreshments at a carenderia when Karim suddenly appeared and shot him. Police Staff Master Sergeant Gajhier Baral, who is investigating the incident, stated that one of Asarul’s companions managed to return fire and hit Karim.

Asarul and his group were part of a convoy with Basilan Governor Jim Hataman-Salliman, who had chosen to stay behind to spend time with his parents. In a statement, Salliman expressed his deep mourning over the untimely demise of Board Member Nasser Asarul and called on the authorities to leave no stone unturned in the investigation.
