Accident – Death – Obituary News : California Investigators Seek Public’s Help in Death of Jewish Man During Israel-Hamas War Protests

A tragic incident unfolded during protests in Thousand Oaks, California, as investigators appeal to the public for assistance in the death of a Jewish man. Paul Kessler, a supporter of Israel, was participating in demonstrations related to the Israel-Hamas conflict that have emerged across cities in the United States. These protests either express solidarity with Israel or aim to protest its retaliatory actions following the Hamas attacks on October 7, which claimed the lives of over 1,400 people.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah, Israel’s military offensive in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of more than 10,000 individuals. Against this backdrop, Kessler was found conscious and responsive when sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene. He was promptly transported to a hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition. Tragically, Kessler succumbed to his injuries overnight.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office is treating Kessler’s death as a homicide and has not ruled out the possibility of a hate crime. A 50-year-old suspect, who has cooperated with investigators, was interviewed at the scene. He claimed to have been involved in an altercation with Kessler and stated that he was one of the individuals who called 911 for medical assistance. Although the suspect was briefly detained, he was subsequently released after a search of his home.

While the medical examiner has classified Kessler’s cause of death as a homicide, this designation does not automatically imply criminal intent. Dr. Christopher Young, Ventura County’s chief medical examiner, clarified that it signifies the death occurred at the hands or as a result of the actions of another person. The district attorney’s office will determine whether criminal charges are warranted in this case.

The tragic incident has prompted leaders from both the Jewish and Muslim communities to denounce violence and express their condolences. Amid rising fears of hate-motivated attacks reported by Jews, Muslims, and Palestinians in the US, community leaders stress the importance of unity. In response to the incident, the sheriff’s office has increased patrols around Muslim and Jewish houses of worship and community centers.

Regarding the altercation that led to Kessler’s injuries, approximately 75 to 100 people were gathered at the intersection in Thousand Oaks during the protests. The groups involved were identified as “Freedom for Palestine” and “We are Pro-Israel.” Prior to the incident involving Kessler, no violent encounters had occurred during the nearly two dozen protests held across the county since the start of the conflict.

Shortly after 3:20 p.m. on Sunday, multiple calls were made to the sheriff’s office reporting a possible assault related to the protests. Responding deputies and medical personnel found Kessler lying on the ground, conscious and responsive. Video footage captured at the scene shows Kessler with blood on his face, receiving aid from individuals, including a woman draped in a Palestinian flag. However, the altercation leading to Kessler’s injuries was not recorded.

According to authorities, an investigation revealed that a pro-Palestinian protester had been involved in an altercation with Kessler. During the altercation, Kessler fell backward, hitting his head on the ground. Witnesses at the scene provided conflicting accounts of who initiated the confrontation and how it transpired.

An autopsy conducted on Kessler revealed that his cause of death was blunt force head trauma. The examination also identified skull fractures, brain swelling, bruising, and non-lethal facial injuries consistent with a fall.

Local government officials, Jewish organizations, and Muslim community leaders are urging patience as authorities investigate the incident. The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles expressed devastation over Kessler’s loss and condemned violence against the Jewish community. Similarly, the Council on American-Islamic Relations-Los Angeles called for refraining from jumping to conclusions and sensationalizing the tragedy for political gain.

As the investigation continues, the community awaits answers while emphasizing the need for unity and the rejection of violence, hatred, and discrimination..
