Armed Man Identified as Robert William Berry Shot and Killed by Mooresville Police Outside Hospital

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — In a tragic incident, an armed man was fatally shot by Mooresville police outside Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The police stated that the man complied with initial commands to drop his weapon, but then picked it back up and posed a threat to the officers.

A call was made to Mooresville police just before 4 a.m. regarding a man who had arrived at the hospital and was threatening self-harm in his vehicle. Hospital security reported that the man, identified as 56-year-old Robert William Berry, had placed a gun in his pocket before heading out to the parking lot.

Upon receiving the call, officers from the Mooresville police force rushed to the scene and located Berry in the parking lot, near his vehicle. It was reported that Berry was holding a gun, prompting the officers to issue multiple commands for him to drop his weapon. Initially, Berry appeared to comply with the officers’ instructions, but then unexpectedly picked up the gun again, posing a serious threat to the safety of the officers. In response, one of the officers fired multiple shots at Berry.

Immediately after the shooting, the officers initiated life-saving measures on Berry before handing him over to the care of the hospital staff. Tragically, Berry succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Mooresville Police Department has not released the identity of the officer who fired the fatal shots. As per standard protocol, the officer has been placed on administrative leave while a further investigation is conducted to determine if department protocols were followed during the incident. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is carrying out an independent investigation alongside the MPD’s administrative inquiry.

In light of this tragic event, the Mooresville Police Department has scheduled a press conference at 2 p.m. on Wednesday to provide updates on the ongoing investigation.
