The incident took place on December 23, 2021, inside Darvish’s apartment on the 19300 block of Circle Gate Drive in Germantown. A heated altercation between Samm and Darvish escalated, leading Samm to discharge seven rounds from two firearms. Tragically, three of those bullets struck Darvish, causing fatal injuries. One of the remaining bullets pierced the floor and entered an apartment unit below, fortunately causing no additional injuries.

During the investigation, law enforcement discovered social media posts made by Samm in the weeks leading up to the incident. These posts depicted Samm posing with one of the firearms believed to have been used in the shooting. This evidence played a crucial role in establishing Samm’s culpability.

Upon responding to a report of a shooting at 19347 Circle Gate Drive on December 23, 2021, the Montgomery County Police Department discovered the lifeless body of Jahandar Darvish inside his residence. Further investigation led to the recovery of several spent shell casings of .40 caliber and various items for DNA processing. Authorities hoped that these pieces of evidence would aid in obtaining a DNA profile of the suspect.

Through the course of the investigation, it was revealed that Darvish had recently relocated from 12809 Pinnacle Drive to his current address on Circle Gate Drive. A resident of the previous address informed investigators that on the day of the incident, a black male wearing a black winter jacket with a fur-trimmed hood approached their apartment door. The individual was captured on the Ring video system, spending several minutes at the door before making a phone call and leaving. The resident did not recognize the man but believed he was searching for Darvish.

One witness, whose identity will be disclosed at a later time, was present with Darvish in his apartment during the incident. Prior to the shooting, Darvish was engaged in a phone conversation with an individual, giving them directions to his current apartment from his old one. Darvish mentioned to the witness that they might know the person coming over, as they were friends on Instagram. Once the individual arrived at the apartment door, the phone call ended. Approximately 20 to 30 minutes later, an argument ensued between Darvish and the individual, ultimately resulting in the fatal shooting. The witness provided the Instagram accounts “df_r_da_longwayy” and “df_rx_longwayy_4life” as belonging to the individual who visited Darvish’s apartment that day.

Another witness reported hearing gunshots and subsequently observed a black male fleeing the building and entering a new model silver GMC SUV. The vehicle initially took a wrong turn to exit the parking lot but swiftly changed direction and sped away. The witness managed to capture a photograph of the vehicle, which was later identified as a newer model GMC Terrain.

Investigators were able to connect the aforementioned Instagram accounts to Mario Samm, a black male born on November 8, 1990. Samm has an extensive criminal history, including charges related to narcotics trafficking, armed robbery, first-degree assault, and handgun violations. He is a notorious figure within law enforcement circles and has been the subject of numerous extensive criminal investigations. The biographical information contained in his prior social media accounts matched the details provided in the Instagram accounts linked to the incident. To further confirm Samm’s identity, investigators compared his photographs on the Instagram account to his driver’s license photo from the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration, conclusively establishing their match.

The sentencing of Mario Samm to 55 years in prison for second-degree murder brings a measure of closure to the tragic loss of Jahandar Darvish. The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office hopes that this outcome will serve as a deterrent to future acts of violence and bring solace to the victim’s family and friends..
