Two Newberry Men Arrested for Armed Robbery and Attempted Murder, Victim Hospitalized with Non-Life Threatening Injury to Legs

Accident – Death – Obituary News : NEWBERRY COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities have announced the arrest of two Newberry men in connection with an armed robbery and attempted murder that took place in the early morning hours of Thursday, November 2, 2023, in the Little Ranches Drive area off Highway 34.

The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an individual being shot during a robbery at a residence on Little Ranches Drive. The victim was transported to a hospital in a personal vehicle before being transferred to Richland Hospital. Fortunately, the injuries sustained were non-life threatening and limited to the victim’s legs.

During the course of their investigation, deputies were able to identify three of the four suspects involved in the incident. Further information led them to a residence on Speers Street in the City of Newberry, where two of the suspects, Antonio Malik Washington and Jaywon Tylik Jones, were apprehended. They were charged with armed robbery and attempted murder in connection with the Little Ranches Drive incident.

In a significant development, law enforcement officers discovered five handguns with extended clips and an AR 15 rifle during the search of the suspects’ residence on Speers Street. Additionally, investigators also found drugs in the house, where two small children were present at the time of the arrest.

It is worth noting that Antonio Malik Washington was already out on bond for a previous charge of attempted murder and had seven active General Session Bench Warrants. Sheriff Lee Foster emphasized the importance of apprehending the third suspect, Daquan Malik Cooper, and urged anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office or Crimestoppers.

Sheriff Foster expressed his concern for the safety of the community, stating, “These are cowards who prey on law-abiding citizens, placing people in harm’s way or worse.” He assured the public that the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office is working closely with other law enforcement agencies, including the Newberry City Police, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, ATF, and the 8th Judicial Circuit, to ensure the safety of the citizens and bring justice to those who disregard the law.
