Chicago Police Officers Engage in Deadly Shootout with Suspect in South Shore

CHICAGO — A tense situation unfolded in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago on Monday morning as police officers exchanged gunfire with a man, resulting in his death. Superintendent Larry Snelling provided details during a news conference held in the afternoon.
The incident occurred near the intersection of East 73rd Street and South Dante Avenue. According to Snelling, the officers were in the process of conducting an investigatory stop when the individual fled on foot and began firing at them. In response, the officers returned fire, striking the suspect. Tranza Campbell, a 32-year-old man, was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center in “extremely critical” condition but was pronounced dead shortly after noon, as confirmed by the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Amidst the gunfire, one police officer sustained an injury to the arm. The wounded officer was quickly transported to the University of Chicago Medicine for medical attention. Snelling assured concerned citizens that the officer’s condition was stable.
The Chicago Fire Department played a critical role in swiftly responding to the scene. Authorities recovered a firearm at the location, adding weight to the reports of an exchange of gunfire.

The officers involved in the shooting incident, all hailing from the Grand Crossing district, are currently under observation at a local hospital.
