Tragic Deaths from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In a tragic incident, three lives were lost due to carbon monoxide poisoning in Kansas City earlier this week. The incident occurred when a power generator was running inside a residential property during the early hours of Monday morning, as reported by the Kansas City Fire Department.

The victims, identified as 42-year-old Alex Solsa Silvia, 34-year-old Santos Ortiz-Acosta, and 14-year-old Elvin Romero, were found lifeless inside the house. Fire Chief Michael Hopkins explained that since the victims were asleep, they likely didn’t experience any symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, or shortness of breath, which could have alerted them to the overexposure of carbon monoxide.

Hopkins emphasized the importance of avoiding such risks and urged others not to make the same mistake. “Running any gas-powered engine indoors or in a confined space is a dangerous game,” he warned. He further added, “In the unfortunate event that you are already asleep and exposed to a high dose of carbon monoxide, you simply won’t wake up.”

According to Hopkins, it is crucial to operate power generators outdoors or in well-ventilated areas to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. This cautionary advice comes amidst a tragic surge in carbon monoxide-related incidents during this time of year, as people start using furnaces and burners to heat their homes.

Hopkins also offered guidance for those using stoves for heat, although not recommended. He advised, “If you are going to use your stove for heat, ensure proper ventilation, and remember to completely turn it off once you’re done.”
