St. Johnsbury Man Arrested Three Times in 24 Hours for Assault and Break-In: Brandon Clough in Police Custody

Accident – Death – Obituary News : A St. Johnsbury man has been apprehended by the police on three separate occasions within a span of just over 24 hours, following a series of disturbing incidents including breaking into an apartment, assaulting hospital staff, and attempting to assault an off-duty police officer. The individual in question has been identified as 42-year-old Brandon Clough.

The Burlington Police Department first encountered Clough on Sunday evening after a resident of King Street reported a break-in at his apartment. The resident informed the authorities that upon returning home, he discovered that someone had tampered with the door chain from the inside and refused to come out. The intruder, later identified as Clough, allegedly informed the resident that he intended to take a shower. Prompt police intervention enabled them to gain access to the apartment and apprehend Clough. During his arrest, Clough admitted to entering the apartment by climbing the fire escape and entering through a window. As a result, he is now facing charges of felony trespass. Clough was subsequently transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center.

The following night, the police were summoned to the hospital in response to a report of an assault on a staff member in the emergency department. Upon investigation, it was discovered that Clough had punched a hospital staff member in the face while waiting to be discharged. Consequently, he was taken to the Burlington Police Department for processing.

While at the police station, a judge ordered Clough’s release on certain conditions. However, immediately after being escorted out of the station, Clough launched an unprovoked attack on an off-duty police officer in the parking lot. Surveillance footage revealed Clough attempting to strike the officer before being swiftly detained.

As a result of this third offense, Clough has been taken into custody once again. He is currently being held at the Northwest State Correctional Facility on a bail amounting to $200.

In response to this series of disturbing incidents, Burlington Chief of Police Jon Murad has released a statement acknowledging the need for comprehensive action. He expressed his concern that the existing system may not be adequately addressing cases involving individuals who harm others due, in part, to mental health issues. Chief Murad emphasized the urgent requirement for enhanced custodial care facilities to ensure the safety of the community, including residents, hospital workers, and law enforcement officers.

These incidents have raised questions about the efficiency of the current criminal justice system and the need for improved mental health care provisions.
