Kearsey’s body was discovered floating in a canal in Davie on February 18, 1984. At the time, the medical examiner’s office ruled her death as a homicide but was unable to identify her. However, with the help of DNA testing, Kearsey’s remains were recently linked to her daughter, Meaghan Smith, who resides in Gloucester.
Meaghan Smith was only five years old when her mother, then 23 years old, went missing in 1983. Kearsey had divorced Smith’s father and had remarried a member of an infamous crime family in Boston. Smith has chosen not to disclose the name of her stepfather.
For most of her life, Smith had no knowledge of what happened to her mother. The identification of Kearsey’s remains has brought closure to Smith, who expressed that it opened up emotions she didn’t even know were there.
