The incident occurred on Sunday in Thousand Oaks, Calif., as rallies were taking place in response to Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza.

The man, identified as Paul Kessler, was involved in a physical altercation with at least one counterprotester, according to witnesses. When police arrived at the scene, they found Kessler, 69, on the ground with a severe head injury. He was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment but sadly succumbed to his injuries the following day. An autopsy determined that the cause of death was a blunt force head injury.

Authorities have ruled Kessler’s death a homicide and are now investigating whether it was a hate crime. The incident has sparked concern within the community, with the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles describing Kessler as “an elderly Jewish man who was struck in the head by a megaphone wielded by a pro-Palestinian protester.” The federation has called for justice and expressed their condolences to the victim’s family.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office has not yet addressed the claim made by the Jewish Federation, but they did mention that Kessler was a pro-Palestinian protester. The investigation is ongoing, and the sheriff’s office has not ruled out the possibility of a hate crime.

Rabbi Michael Barclay of Temple Ner Simcha, located near where the incident took place, has urged patience and called for the community to refrain from making assumptions or accusations until the police have more information. He noted that conflicting reports of what happened have made it difficult to determine the exact circumstances leading up to Kessler’s death.

While the incident has caused shock and sadness within the community, organizations such as the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) have called for unity and urged against sensationalizing the tragedy for political gains. CAIR-LA expressed their support for the Jewish community and condemned any form of violence, antisemitism, Islamophobia, or incitement of hatred.

This incident comes against the backdrop of a surge in hate crimes against Arabs, Jews, and Muslims in the United States since the start of the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Hate crimes in the country were already on the rise before the conflict began, but the recent events have exacerbated tensions and led to increased incidents of discrimination and violence.

Video footage obtained by KTLA shows Kessler receiving treatment on the ground near a Shell gas station where the altercation took place. Surveillance footage from the gas station shows Kessler holding an Israeli flag next to someone holding a Palestinian flag. However, the view of what happened is obstructed by the Shell sign, making it difficult to determine the exact sequence of events.

The gas station has now become a memorial for Kessler, with candles and flowers left on the sidewalk. Kessler was attending the rally with his wife, who is now left to mourn his loss.

As the investigation into Kessler’s death continues, the community is grappling with the tragic consequences of the altercation. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for peaceful dialogue and understanding, even in times of heightened tensions and conflict..
