The discovery of Janiya’s remains took place in the 10000 block of Aristocrat Drive North, near the Carriage House East apartment complex, which is located off 42nd Street and Mitthoefer Road. Janiya Carr had been reported as a runaway on October 28, after being spotted getting into a car at 4:30 a.m. local time. The vehicle in question was believed to belong to Tevis Walker. Surveillance footage captured the same car entering the area where detectives eventually found the young girl’s lifeless body approximately an hour later.

In a tragic twist, it was revealed that Janiya Carr was wearing the exact same clothes as seen in the video footage when her body was discovered. Prior to her tragic death, Carr had been seen walking near the 4100 block of Newburgh Drive before entering the car. The grim discovery of Janiya’s body was made by a woman who was walking her dog in the neighborhood.

Janiya Carr’s family had reported her missing on October 30, 2023, according to police records. However, she did not receive a missing person alert. Demetria Boston, the victim’s mother, expressed her anguish and heartbreak, stating, “I don’t know how to live with this pain.” Following Walker’s arrest, he was taken into custody at the Marion County Jail. Authorities revealed that Walker had parked his car in the apartment complex’s parking area and then walked to his house, located just a few hundred feet away from the alleged crime scene. Boston, speaking about the incident and the suspect, emphasized the importance of thorough background checks, stating, “This could have been avoided had they done a thorough background check. He shouldn’t be working here. He had a warrant. The torture of what he did to my baby is stuck in my head. I can’t sleep.”

The Gene B. Glick Company, the owner of Carriage House East apartment complex, released a statement expressing their shock and deep sadness over the fatal shooting of Janiya Carr. Investigations into Tevis Walker’s background revealed that he had multiple arrest warrants in Alabama and Georgia. During an interview with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Walker admitted that the vehicle captured in the surveillance footage belonged to him and confirmed that he remembered picking up the victim. The motive behind this alleged murder is still under investigation, as authorities strive to uncover the truth behind this tragic event.
