(KABC) — Funeral services have been scheduled for Tuesday to honor the life of Paul Kessler, a 69-year-old Jewish man who tragically died following a confrontation with pro-Palestinian demonstrators at a rally in Thousand Oaks. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Kessler succumbed to his injuries sustained during the event on Sunday. Authorities are expected to hold a news conference on Tuesday morning to provide further details about the investigation into Kessler’s untimely death.

According to reports, two rival rallies advocating for the Israeli and Palestinian sides of the conflict took place near Westlake and Thousand Oaks boulevards. It is believed that Kessler got involved in an altercation with pro-Palestinian demonstrators, resulting in him falling and hitting his head on the ground.

While the exact nature of the altercation remains under investigation, some witnesses claim that Kessler was struck in the head with a megaphone by an individual from the pro-Palestinian group. The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office has determined that Kessler’s cause of death was a homicide caused by blunt force head injury.

In response to the incident, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office has not ruled out the possibility of a hate crime and is thoroughly investigating the matter. Video footage from the scene shows paramedics attending to Kessler, and witnesses have described a heated confrontation leading up to the fatal incident.

“They were both on even ground, yelling at each other, and then the man brought his megaphone up and hit Paul, and Paul went down,” said an anonymous witness.

Witnesses further claimed that members of the pro-Palestinian group began antagonizing the opposing rally, escalating the situation into violence. A video taken after the incident shows the suspect, identified by witnesses, providing his version of events to law enforcement officials.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles released a statement expressing their devastation over Kessler’s death. They said, “We are devastated to learn of the tragic death of an elderly Jewish man who was struck in the head by a megaphone wielded by a pro-Palestinian protestor in Westlake Village. Our hearts are with the family of the victim. While we wait for more information from our law enforcement partners, we remind you that this is the fourth major antisemitic crime committed in Los Angeles this year alone. Violence against our people has no place in civilized society.”

As the investigation continues, the incident has once again highlighted the need for peaceful dialogue and understanding amidst the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The funeral services for Paul Kessler will serve as a solemn reminder of the tragic consequences that can arise from these heated confrontations.
