Accident – Death – Obituary News : Kolkata: Two separate accidents occurred in Behala, just hours before a major accident on Diamond Harbour Road at Thakurpukur. The incident on Diamond Harbour Road involved two buses and two cars, leaving 21 people injured.

The first accident took place around 10.45 pm on Sunday. A 50-year-old rag-picker was fatally hit by an unidentified vehicle while attempting to cross DH Road near Thakurpukur guard outpost. Witnesses at the scene claimed that the woman was hit by a motorbike. However, the police stated that they are relying on witness accounts due to the absence of any CCTV footage. The case has been handed over to the fatal squad for further investigation.

The second accident occurred on Banamali Naskar Road in Behala, opposite Behala police station. A nine-year-old girl named Somdatta Halder and her mother, Sanjukta (34), were injured when a battery-operated goods vehicle collided with the auto-rickshaw they were traveling in. The incident took place around 2 pm on Sunday while the duo was returning home. Somdatta was admitted to CMRI Hospital and is currently under observation.

These accidents come as a setback for the police force, as efforts to reduce accidents on DH Road and MG Road had shown promising results. Last year, a series of accidents prompted the authorities at Lalbazar to brainstorm and implement various measures that led to a significant drop in accidents this year. However, the recent incidents, particularly since the tragic death of a student at Behala Chowrasta in August, have raised concerns about road safety in the area.

In related news, several other accidents have been reported from different parts of the country. In Kalaburagi, a tragic accident claimed the lives of five members of a family. The accident occurred when a bike carrying the couple and their three children collided with a truck. The family was heading towards Afzalpur when the accident happened. The truck driver fled the scene, leaving the truck behind. The victims have been identified as Krishna Nelwar, his wife Asmitha, and their children Roahan, Milan, and Lakhan. The family had recently moved to Afzalpur from Nepal.

In Vijayawada, the number of road accident deaths has increased by 46% in 2022 compared to the previous year. However, Vizag city has seen a 3% decrease in road accident deaths. Among 50 cities, Vijayawada ranked 13th and Vizag ranked 18th in terms of road accident deaths this year. The overall number of road accidents in Andhra Pradesh has slightly decreased, but the number of deaths has increased. Factors such as the lack of safety measures like seatbelts and helmets, faulty road engineering, and speeding have contributed to these accidents. Authorities need to focus on improving road design and enforcing speed limits to reduce the number of accidents.

In Punjab’s Moga district, a car accident resulted in the deaths of five individuals. The car collided with a truck carrying paddy bags, causing fatal injuries to all five occupants. The bodies have been taken to Moga civil hospital, and their identities have yet to be established. Foggy conditions are believed to have contributed to the accident, and the police are currently investigating the incident.
