ATLANTA — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is currently conducting an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Monday in the southwest area of Atlanta.

The incident took place just blocks away from where a driver, who was being pursued by troopers, crashed into a school bus, as reported by the Georgia State Patrol.

At approximately 3:10 p.m., the Georgia State Patrol stated that a car was observed speeding away from troopers on Campbellton Road.

According to the GBI, the driver of the stolen vehicle ran a red light and collided with a school bus. Following the crash, multiple individuals exited the car and fled the scene.

During the pursuit of the suspects, one of them, identified as 18-year-old Jaron Peters, allegedly fired a handgun at the troopers, leading to a confrontation.

In response, the troopers returned fire, but Peters managed to evade capture by fleeing on foot. Authorities conducted a thorough search of the area and spotted Peters being chased by a police dog through a nearby neighborhood.

According to the GBI, Peters attempted to break into two residences in the vicinity.

Earlier on Monday, Atlanta Public Schools sent a message to parents of Therell High School students regarding the unfolding incident:

“Therell Parents and Guardians, Therrell is currently on an exterior lockdown due to a neighborhood incident. All faculty, students, and staff are safe. No students will be released until we have received an all-clear for APD.”

Concerned parents rushed to the school to ensure the safety of their children.

Janelle Robinson, a parent, expressed her worries about her son, who has autism and struggles to communicate: “He has autism, so I won’t know how he feels until later on tonight or tomorrow, as he doesn’t talk.”

Neatra Zyra Turner, another concerned parent, condemned the actions of the suspects, saying, “For someone to take a car and hit a school bus with innocent children on board, that’s ridiculous.”

According to the GBI, troopers eventually apprehended Peters. However, it was only after his arrest that they discovered he had sustained gunshot wounds.

Peters was subsequently transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. The GBI has not provided any information regarding the other individuals who fled the stolen vehicle.
