The unfortunate incident took place at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and University Drive. Although Vackaro was not enrolled as a student at Michigan State University, it is noteworthy that the collision occurred just across the street from an MSU dormitory, sending shockwaves through the campus community.

According to the police, the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run fled the scene immediately. However, through meticulous investigation techniques, including the deployment of a highly trained canine unit for tracking purposes, the East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) successfully apprehended a suspect. At this stage, the authorities have chosen not to disclose the identity of the individual in custody, and formal charges have not yet been filed.

The ELPD was initially dispatched to the incident at 1:05 a.m. on Sunday, responding to reports of possible gunfire. Upon arrival, however, they discovered that the situation involved a hit-and-run incident with no evidence of any shots being fired.
