The death toll from the devastating blasts that shook a Christian religious gathering nearly a week ago has tragically increased to four, following the passing of a 61-year-old woman identified as Moly Joy. Moly Joy had sustained severe burns, covering over 70% of her body, during the blasts that occurred on October 29. The explosions took place at a religious gathering organized by the Jehovah’s Witnesses, a Christian sect, and Moly Joy was receiving ventilator support for her critical condition.

The initial medical treatment for Moly Joy was provided at another private hospital before she was transferred to the Ernakulam Medical Centre, where her battle for life unfortunately ended.

A medical bulletin released by the dedicated medical board responsible for treating the blast victims revealed that a total of 19 individuals are currently undergoing medical care. Among them, 11 are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while the remaining eight are being treated in the general wards. The bulletin also highlighted that the condition of two patients remains critical.

“The woman who sustained serious injuries in the incident passed away at Ernakulam Medical Centre at 5:08 am, bringing the total number of reported deaths related to the blasts to four,” stated the bulletin.

The unfortunate incident had already claimed the lives of a 12-year-old girl named Libina from Malayattoor in Ernakulam district, who succumbed to her injuries on October 30 at the Kalamassery Government Medical College Hospital. Additionally, two women who were attending the religious gathering also lost their lives on the day of the blasts.

During the multiple explosions that occurred at the international convention centre in Kalamassery, located near this port city in Kerala, over 50 individuals were left injured, some with severe wounds. The victims had gathered for the concluding day of a three-day prayer meeting organized by the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Within a few hours after the incident, a man identifying himself as an estranged member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses turned himself in to the police in Thrissur district, claiming responsibility for the series of blasts. Subsequently, the police took him into custody and recorded his arrest. The accused, Dominic Martin, was remanded to police custody on Monday.
