In a shocking incident that has left the community in disbelief, a 55-year-old blind man from Ohio was arrested over the weekend for allegedly killing his 65-year-old live-in girlfriend. James F. Toothman is accused of sitting on the victim’s head and breaking her neck, resulting in her tragic death. Toothman was taken into custody on Sunday and has been charged with first-degree murder, according to court records reviewed by Law&Crime.

The incident came to light when officers from the Cheviot Police Department and firefighters from the Cheviot Fire Department responded to an emergency call on November 5th. The call reported an unresponsive adult female at an apartment complex located on Lovell Avenue, just 10 miles outside of Cincinnati. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the victim, later identified as Jeni Russell, lying facedown on a couch in the living room.

Russell was immediately rushed to Mercy West Hospital in Cincinnati for treatment. However, her condition deteriorated rapidly, and she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the medical facility. It was later revealed that Russell had suffered a broken neck, as observed by an investigator from the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office.

One chilling detail that emerged during the investigation is that Toothman is legally blind. This adds a layer of complexity to the case, as it raises questions about how Toothman was able to commit such a heinous act without visual perception. The police report states that Toothman made an “unsolicited” comment at the couple’s residence, admitting that he was at fault for Russell’s death because he had “sat on her head.” A nurse at the hospital also claimed to have overheard Toothman taking responsibility for the incident.

Further scrutiny of the couple’s history revealed a pattern of domestic violence. Both Toothman and Russell had been arrested multiple times on domestic violence charges related to altercations between them. Toothman had faced previous charges of domestic violence assault against Russell in 2018, 2019, and 2021. However, all charges were dropped due to Russell’s lack of cooperation in pursuing legal action.

Affidavits obtained by WXIX, a local news outlet, shed light on some of the past incidents. In one case from 2018, Toothman allegedly pushed Russell to the ground and smothered her by holding a mattress over her, preventing her from breathing. More recently, on March 8th, officers responded to their home and found Toothman with visible wounds on his chest and head. Toothman claimed that Russell had struck him over the head and stabbed him with unknown objects, leading to her subsequent arrest on domestic violence assault charges.

The Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office had issued subpoenas to Toothman, requesting his testimony against Russell in court. However, the subpoenas were returned as the couple’s apartment was found to be vacant. Consequently, the charge against Russell was dismissed.

The shocking and tragic death of Jeni Russell has sent shockwaves through the community. The case raises important questions about the dynamics of domestic violence and the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities. As the investigation continues, the authorities will seek to uncover the full truth behind this disturbing incident.
