The hit-and-run incident took place on Friday afternoon when the student was reportedly struck by a car. According to the victim, the driver made eye contact, accelerated, and then shouted obscenities before driving away. Fortunately, the victim’s injuries were not life-threatening.

The Stanford Department of Public Safety released a statement condemning the incident, expressing their profound disturbance and labeling hate-based violence as morally reprehensible. Stanford President Richard Saller and Provost Jenny Martinez also issued a joint statement denouncing the incident and emphasizing that violence on campus is unacceptable.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations San Francisco Bay Area released a statement in response to the incident, highlighting the urgent need to address the growing Islamophobia and hatred in communities.

This recent incident is not an isolated one. Stanford’s public safety authorities revealed that the series of hate crime incidents began on October 15. It started with a group of students who identified as Arab, Muslim, and/or Palestinian reporting being shoved by another student while attempting to add and remove posters on campus. Stanford considers these anti-Arab and Islamophobic acts abhorrent and is investigating them as hate crimes.

In another incident, a student of color was allegedly spat at by another student while seated near a Palestinian liberation display at the Palo Alto campus’s White Plaza location. The authorities have labeled this act as “egregious behavior” and are investigating it as a hate crime.

Additionally, a group of Arab, Muslim, and/or Palestinian students gathered in the same area of campus on October 18 when someone ran over a tote bag decorated with a design in the shape of Palestine. This incident is also being investigated as a hate-motivated crime.

Furthermore, on October 28, a mezuzah, a sacred religious symbol, was removed from the door of a Jewish student’s residence. This act is considered a form of intimidation against the Jewish community and is being treated as a potential hate crime.

Public safety authorities at Stanford University are urging anyone with information on these incidents to come forward. CNN has reached out to the California Highway Patrol for further details.

These incidents highlight the need for immediate action to address and combat the growing Islamophobia and hatred that have been plaguing communities. Stanford University remains committed to ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all its students and taking a strong stance against hate-based violence..
