We are deeply saddened to report the passing of Byron Shewman, the founder of Starlings Volleyball Club, who left us on October 5th, 2023. Byron’s departure has left a void in the volleyball community, where he had an immeasurable impact throughout his life.

Born and raised in the United Kingdom, Byron Shewman dedicated his life to the sport he loved. From a young age, he showed exceptional talent and passion for volleyball. As he grew older, he realized the lack of opportunities for young athletes in his community and decided to take matters into his own hands. In 1996, he founded Starlings Volleyball Club, aiming to provide underprivileged children with the chance to participate in volleyball and reap its countless benefits.

Byron’s vision extended beyond the sport itself. He believed that volleyball could serve as a vehicle for social change and personal growth. Through Starlings, he offered mentorship, guidance, and academic support to his players, empowering them to succeed on and off the court. His tireless efforts resulted in the transformation of countless lives, as he opened doors that were previously closed to many.

Under Byron’s leadership, Starlings Volleyball Club flourished. The organization expanded rapidly, establishing numerous chapters across the country. Byron’s dedication and unwavering commitment to his players earned him widespread admiration and respect from the volleyball community and beyond.

He worked tirelessly to ensure that both boys and girls had equal access to training and competition opportunities.
