death – Obituary News : Tatyanna Bailey, a talented basketball player for the Hendrickson team, has tragically passed away at the young age of 17 after a courageous battle with cancer. Bailey captured the hearts of many when she bravely returned to the basketball court just six weeks after undergoing brain surgery in December.

Bailey’s return to the game was a remarkable moment that garnered significant media attention. In her first game back against Bastrop, she displayed her skill and determination by scoring 12 points. At the time, she was undergoing radiation therapy and was scheduled to begin chemotherapy in mid-February.

In February, the American-Statesman featured a story about Bailey, highlighting her strength and resilience. Her inspiring journey was acknowledged at the Long Center’s annual Gannett Austin Area High School Sports Awards celebration in June, where she was honored with the Courage Award.

The head coach of Hendrickson, Norma Sierra, declined to comment on Saturday, respecting the family’s wish for privacy. However, she mentioned that grief counselors would be available at the school on Monday to support the students and staff during this difficult time.

Bailey’s basketball career faced a setback in 2017 when she suffered a leg injury. However, she remained determined and resilient. On December 6, she underwent an MRI due to persistent headaches, leading to the discovery of a malignant tumor the size of a softball in her brain. Surgeons were able to remove 95% of the tumor the following day.

The moment Bailey stepped back onto the basketball court, her teammates were overjoyed. Her mother, Latraica Spencer-Bailey, who also served as an assistant coach at Hendrickson, and Coach Sierra provided unwavering support throughout her medical journey.

During her challenging time, Bailey formed a close bond with the team’s athletic trainer, Brigid Milching. Standing at 5-foot-11, Bailey also faced the additional challenge of drop foot, a condition that affects the ability to elevate the front portion of the foot. This condition was exacerbated by the presence of the tumor.

When Bailey made her triumphant return to the game on January 27, the Hendrickson crowd erupted in a thunderous standing ovation. Her teammates cheered as she made her first basket, a remarkable 3-pointer, and they surrounded her during a stoppage in play, showing their love and support.

The loss of Tatyanna Bailey is not only a devastating blow to her family and friends but also to the entire Hendrickson community. Her bravery, resilience, and determination will be remembered as an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

As the community mourns the loss of this young athlete, it is a reminder of the importance of supporting one another during difficult times and cherishing every moment. Tatyanna Bailey’s legacy will undoubtedly live on as a symbol of strength and courage in the face of adversity..
