Maxie Baughan, Georgia Tech Football Legend, Passes Away at 85

Maxie Baughan, a revered figure in the world of college football and a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, tragically passed away over the weekend at the age of 85, as confirmed by Georgia Tech.
Baughan, who played for Georgia Tech from 1957 to 1959, showcased his immense talent as both a center and linebacker. During his time at the university, Baughan left an indelible mark on the sport, earning the prestigious title of first-team All-American in 1959.
Furthermore, Baughan’s exceptional performance on the field led him to be named the Southeastern Conference Lineman of the Year in 1959, along with being twice recognized as an all-SEC honoree.
As a senior in 1959, Baughan captained the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, where he demonstrated his prowess by amassing an impressive 124 tackles, a school record at the time. His incredible achievements culminated in being named the co-MVP of the 1960 Gator Bowl.
“On behalf of the entire Georgia Tech football family, I offer my deepest condolences to the Baughan family,” expressed Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key. “Maxie is one of the most legendary figures in our program’s history and a shining example of what a Tech Man represents. We are profoundly saddened by his passing.”

Outstanding Career and Contributions

Following his remarkable college career, Baughan was drafted in the second round by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1960, where he would go on to play for six seasons. Throughout his time in the NFL, Baughan showcased his exceptional skills and football acumen.
In 1972, Baughan decided to retire from professional football and returned to his alma mater, Georgia Tech, to take on the role of defensive coordinator for the Yellow Jackets. However, his tenure at the university was short-lived as he departed in 1974 to continue his career in the NFL, this time as a player-coach for the Washington Redskins.
After his playing days were over, Baughan embarked on a successful coaching career, serving as a coach for various teams including the Baltimore Colts, Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Baltimore Ravens.

A Legacy of Distinction

Maxie Baughan’s exceptional contributions to the sport of football have not gone unnoticed. In 1965, he was inducted into the Georgia Tech Sports Hall of Fame, further solidifying his status as a legendary figure within the university’s athletic history.
In 1988, Baughan’s achievements were recognized at a national level when he was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame. He also received honors from the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, and the Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Fame.
In a testament to his enduring impact, Baughan was named a semifinalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2022, demonstrating the admiration and respect he garnered throughout his career.
