By | August 19, 2023

death – Obituary News : South Sydney Rugby League Club has announced that they will retire jersey number 15 this weekend as a tribute to the late Kyle Turner, a former premiership-winning player. Turner, who tragically passed away at the age of 31, was a versatile forward who made a significant impact during his time with the Rabbitohs from 2014 to 2019. In addition to retiring his jersey number, the Rabbitohs players will also wear black armbands as a mark of respect during their match against Newcastle on Sunday.

Expressing his condolences, Rabbitohs Chief Executive Blake Solly described Turner as an “amazing human being” who embodied the spirit of a country boy playing rugby league. Solly further praised Turner’s toughness and tenacity on the field, coupled with his kind and generous nature off the field. The club intends to honor Turner’s memory throughout the season and in the years to come.

Turner’s career highlights include his participation in the Rabbitohs’ 2014 grand final victory, where he played a crucial role as a bench player. This achievement came in his rookie season, during which he appeared in 24 games. He also had the privilege of representing NSW Country in the last City vs Country fixture in 2017 and played for the Indigenous All Stars team in 2015 and 2017.

Unfortunately, Turner’s time in first-grade rugby league was plagued by injuries. In particular, he suffered a serious neck injury during the 2015 All Stars match, which required him to undergo disc replacement surgery. Despite these setbacks, Turner remained a beloved figure among the Redfern faithful, as evidenced by him receiving the Burrow Supporters Group Appreciation Award at the club’s awards night in 2016.

In 2019, Turner’s career took a turn when the Rabbitohs appointed Wayne Bennett as their new coach. Under Bennett’s leadership, Turner found himself falling out of favor and was advised to seek opportunities elsewhere from 2020 onwards. He subsequently returned to his hometown of Coonabarabran in northern New South Wales, where he continued to play rugby league for the local team, the Coonabarabran Unicorns. Turner also pursued a career as a schoolteacher, making a positive impact on the lives of young students.

The Coonabarabran Unicorns will join the Rabbitohs in paying tribute to Turner by wearing black armbands in their upcoming match. The exact cause of Turner’s untimely death remains unknown, adding to the sadness surrounding his passing.
