death – Obituary News : Al Quie, a former congressman and governor of Minnesota, passed away on August 18 at the age of 99, according to his family. Quie, known for his stoic Norwegian demeanor and deep Lutheran faith, represented southern Minnesota in Congress for 20 years before returning home to serve one term as governor. During his political career, Quie never lost an election and was able to win over voters from both parties with his bipartisan approach.

Quie was born on September 18, 1923, on a farm in Wheeling Township. He grew up as a third-generation dairy farmer and fought in World War II after enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1943. After the war, he attended St. Olaf College where he met his future wife, Gretchen Hansen. They married in 1948 and settled on the family farm, continuing the tradition of Norwegian dairy farming.

Quie’s political career began when he won a seat in the state Legislature in 1954. Four years later, he was urged to run for a seat in the U.S. Congress after the incumbent representative passed away. Quie won the special election by a narrow margin and went on to serve in Congress until 1978.

In 1978, Quie decided to run for governor and won with 53% of the vote. His victory was attributed to DFLers’ attempts to cover up a legislative audit, which Quie confronted during a televised debate. However, his term as governor was marked by budget troubles and poor financial advice, leading to a deficit and broken campaign promises.

Despite the challenges, Quie maintained a humble faith throughout his life. He believed that God had called him to serve, but did not believe in a magical or direct intervention from God. Quie’s ability to work across the aisle and his broad appeal made him a respected and trusted figure in Minnesota politics.

As Quie’s political career came to an end, he decided not to seek a second term as governor. He faced criticism and challenges throughout his tenure, and the decision to step down brought a sense of relief for him and his wife.
