The UC Berkeley campus police department has revealed that the remains discovered in an unoccupied building near the university earlier this year belong to a man from Katy, Texas. The man, Steven Lawrence McCreary, is believed to have been a victim of homicide. The police are now seeking the assistance of the public in providing any information that may help with the investigation.

Based on DNA evidence and the analysis of the bones by the Alameda County Coroner’s Office, it has been determined that McCreary’s death was a result of homicide. The condition of the remains suggests that the incident took place many years ago, although McCreary was known to be alive as recently as 2009, when he would have been around 37 years old.

It is worth noting that McCreary had no association with UC Berkeley and was originally from Texas. His parents, who reside in Katy, revealed that he had a tendency to travel extensively, often using trains or hitchhiking as means of transportation. Although he had spent some time in the San Francisco Bay Area, he did not have a known residence there.

The news of their son’s fate has left McCreary’s parents in a state of shock, and they declined to appear on camera. They last saw him during the Christmas period in 2008 and early 2009 after purchasing a ticket for him to travel to San Francisco.

McCreary’s family moved to Katy from Tennessee in 1982 when his father secured a job with the Houston Police Department. Over the years, they tirelessly searched for him, as he had a tendency to disappear but would always make contact on his birthday and during the holidays. They described him as someone who loved to travel and camp.

Expressing his deep-seated belief that something had happened to his son, McCreary’s father never imagined that he would meet such a tragic end. The UC Berkeley Police Department (UCPD) first became aware of the skeletal remains in January 2023 and promptly responded to the scene. They refrained from publicly disclosing details until now to ensure the proper identification of the remains, notify the next of kin, and safeguard the integrity of the investigation, which is still ongoing.

UCPD is now appealing to the public for assistance in uncovering the truth about McCreary’s fate. They are urging anyone who has had any interaction with him to come forward and contact UCPD Detective Sergeant Jon Caires or Detective Mitch Levi..
