A suspect has been apprehended in connection with the shooting death of a pregnant teenager in Laurel, Mississippi. The victim, 16-year-old Alisha McLemore, was found with a gunshot wound to the head and was taken to the hospital where she later died. The baby was delivered and is in good condition. The suspect, 18-year-old Tavaris Atwood, has been charged with second-degree murder. A suspect has been apprehended following the tragic death of a pregnant teenager in Laurel, Mississippi. The victim, identified as 16-year-old Alisha McLemore, was shot on Monday night. The incident occurred in the 1300 block of North 2nd Avenue, prompting the Laurel Police Department to respond to a shooting complaint. When officers arrived, they discovered a pregnant female with a gunshot wound to the head. The victim was immediately transported to South Central Regional Medical Center, where medical professionals successfully delivered a baby girl.

Both the mother and the newborn were later transferred to the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Sadly, the mother was pronounced deceased at UMMC, while the baby remains in good condition. Child Protection Services has been called in to provide support for the baby girl.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, law enforcement officers from the Smith County Sheriff’s Office took a suspect into custody at a residence near Taylorsville. The Laurel Police Department responded and transferred the suspect, identified as 18-year-old Tavaris Atwood of Taylorsville, to the Jones County Adult Detention Center. Atwood is currently facing one count of second-degree murder; however, it was previously reported that he would be charged with first-degree murder, according to an earlier press release by LPD.

Tavaris Atwood is scheduled to appear in Laurel Municipal Court on Wednesday for his initial hearing.

The police have not disclosed any information regarding the motive or connection between the suspect and the victim at this time. The Laurel Police Department expresses its gratitude to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, Mississippi Child Protective Services, and the Jones County District Attorney’s Office for their assistance in this case.
