A Minneapolis police officer who was shot in what authorities are describing as an “ambush” is now in the process of recovering after being released from the hospital on Friday night. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office has recently announced charges against two suspects believed to be involved in the shooting incident. Frederick Leon Davis, aged 19, has been charged with attempted second-degree murder, while Nevaeh Lee Page, aged 20, has been charged with aiding an offender. These charges stem from a shooting on August 11, which left a seven-year veteran officer of the Minneapolis Police Department injured.

According to court records, the incident occurred when an officer on patrol observed a potentially stolen Chevy Equinox, which was allegedly involved in a robbery and had previously evaded the police in Brooklyn Park and Minneapolis. The officer followed the Equinox for approximately eight blocks until he noticed the suspect vehicle parked with its lights off. As he approached, the officer heard gunshots and witnessed muzzle flashes, leading him to believe that he was being fired upon from two different directions.

The officer, struck in the back of the shoulder, immediately drove away and met with two fellow officers at the intersection of Fremont Avenue North and Webber Parkway. From there, he was taken to the hospital for treatment. Thankfully, his gunshot wound was determined to be non-life-threatening, and he was discharged a few hours later. He is currently in stable condition.

Additional officers who responded to the incident located the suspect vehicle again and attempted to make a stop. However, the driver, identified as Davis, fled from the scene. A pursuit ensued, involving officers from the Minneapolis Police Department and deputies from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, until the suspect vehicle crashed near 21st Avenue and Upton Avenue North.

Davis and Page fled on foot from the crash site but were apprehended shortly after by law enforcement officers who deployed K9 units. Two other individuals, including a juvenile who sustained a head injury from the crash, were arrested at the scene. During a search of the vehicle, law enforcement discovered a “ghost gun” where the juvenile had been seated in the back, as well as another firearm in the front where Davis had been seated. The charges explained that the Glock firearm had been modified to be fully automatic.

Forensic analysis indicates that the Glock automatic firearm had discharged 12 rounds, while the ghost gun had been fired three times. Law enforcement officials are continuing to examine the vehicle and the firearms for further evidence. In interviews with investigators, Page stated that she noticed they were being followed, and Davis instructed her to keep an eye on the pursuing vehicle before pulling over. However, she refused to provide information about who fired the shots or identify the individuals in the back seat, claiming not to know them. Nevertheless, someone in the car informed authorities that Davis was one of the shooters.

Page and Davis are scheduled to make their initial court appearance on Wednesday afternoon, and the case remains under investigation. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty expressed her concern about the level of gun violence over the weekend and highlighted the danger posed by modified firearms. She affirmed her commitment to prosecuting such acts of violence to ensure justice for victims, remove dangerous weapons from the streets, and collaborate closely with law enforcement during the investigation.
